Methinks it is a waste of time trying to "understand the why". Just go with it and enjoy the excitement. And know that you are not the only one. As Freud said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" (Unless of course the guy has had a penectomy, but that's another story.

I think you might have misinterpreted the word 'spaulders' (shoulder armour) as 'spiders'. Not that eighted legged balls with wings isn't an entertaining image. 😄
