Liquid nitrogen spray can?

This is hypothetical (and probably a fantasy), but, is it possible to put liquid nitrogen in a can that a woman can carry in her purse?

And if so, what would happen if she sprayed a rapist's genitals with it?

Even if you could find it in a can, which you won't, it would do this : the spray parts would freeze on contact, if she were close enough to spray it on the genitals without it vaporizing into the warm air first. The effected parts would then instantly freeze solid, and shatter like glass if hit. Of course, the thawing out of the wound would be painful and likely lead to infection, if not bleeding to death right there on the spot. I really don't know if you could hand-hold the can. Even shake up canned air and notice how cold the can gets? Frostbite!

Seems to me that Nitrogen must maintain a state of -40F for it to maintain a liquid state.

Thinking about it, there may be a couple ways to get liquid nitrogen into a hand-held cannister. The easiest (although short-term) would be a double-walled cannister with a vacuum between them. Not ideal, and not likely to last long.

A much harder way (although more long-term) would be simply to increase the pressure until you get the nitrogen into a liquid state. Pressurize it enough, and nitrogen will remain a liquid even at room temperature. (Hell, pressurize it enough, and you could wind up with a chunk of solid hydrogen).

The only trouble with that is, we don't have anything (to the best of my knowledge) that could handle those kind of pressures, and still remain hand-sized. It'd probably be pretty tricky to get liquid nitrogen at room temperature in any kind of container we could build.

Why not use something easier? Even a standard CO2 cartridge gets fairly cold when you puncture it. 1lb propane tanks will ice up with use. Nitrogen may just be overkill here.

Or if you want something else, is it possible yet to build portable cutting lasers? Just slice through the offending genitals. (Would it be legal to use a laser pointer in self-defense to blind an attacker??)

IEunuch.

Cool, like a "lightsaber", huh. :)

That CO2/propane idea is very interesting. I wonder if it will become reality some day - I mean people already carry around pepper spray.

Just use a can on compressed air (The type for cleaning computers or other electronic equipment). By inverting the can (turning upside-down) the fluid that comes out will freeze stuff to a degree. I doubt that you will get the frozen balls that can easily be shattered, but you will definitely cause pain, and if enough is sprayed frostbite.

It would not be useful for actually castrating a rapist, however. The skin may freeze and given enough time shatter, but the amount of time it would take to do even that to it is long enough that most anybody could either run away or kick it out of your hand.

I used to get these weird little warts burned off with it when I was a kid, and even freezing a piece of skin the size of a grain of rice took a few seconds. When you see it happen super fast in the movies, it's just for dramatic effect.

You can do some pretty cool stuff with it and a balloon, though.

Actually, liquid nitrogen can freeze things solid very fast, as long as the item is SUBMERGED in it (rather than spraying it).

In physics demonstrations my university instructors did several things like freezing a baseball and dropping it to have it shatter. It only took about 10 seconds of freeze a baseball completely.

I have definitely fantasized about doing that to my genitals. It would be quite an amazing sight!

So,

Here is one story from the Archive about this.

When liquid gas leaves a bottle, it draws heat from the bottle & the bottle draws heat from whatever is near it. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that if one was holding a can of liquid nitrogen big enough to deliver enough N to actually lower scrotal temperature to the point where it would freeze, one's hand would freeze, too.

Re: lazers. A nice thought. Unfortunately, lazer is just another type of light which, unlike regular light, does not diffuse. Assuming that it takes 1000 watts of heat to burn through something you would need enough power to generate that with a lazer & that would take too many batteries to allow it to be portable.

try dry ice, easier to carry.

Sorry, but this is a very bad idea. You can't seal a container of liquid nitrogen because it will warm up and reach explosive pressures. I once worked at a compressed gas company and they showed pictures of what compressed gas cylinders could do as they underwent "rapid decompression" ...

AND no woman wants to carry that much destructive power in her purse. A 357 magnun pistol would be kinder and gentler and easier to handle.

Liquid nitrogen boils at -195.8 celsius, or -320.3 fahrenheit at one atmosphere. It's Propane that has a boiling point that is approximately -40 degrees. Liquid Nitrogen is kept in a dewar flask, which is just a thermos on steroids, for short-term storage in the lab and even then it still boils off, albiet much slower than it would in an uninsulated container.

You can carry liquid oxygen around in a dewar bottle, and you regularly see people who

need extra oxygen doing it. Who knows, your grandma may already have one.

If you were to spray the rapist with liquid oxygen his parts would freeze, then you can throw

a match and he will be incinerated.

rapist -> pile of ashes.
