One year as a eunuch

Yes, it has been one year. I was castrated by Dr. Spector on 14 May 2001 (and had the scrotum removed by Dr. Kimmel on 18 January 2002). So what changes have I undergone in the last year? Let me use the format that Sherry used on her excellent web page at

http://www.geocities.com/sherrylanina/C ... fects.html

1) Decreased libido. In my case, now zero libido. Of course, I was age 56 at castration and very unlikely to retain any after the operation. So, as expected and quite acceptable.

2) Infertility. Well, Duh.

3) Feeling calm. As Dr. Spector stated on his older web site "In either case of TS or eunuch, a deep calm serenity develops which, from then on, makes life far more worthwhile".

4) Post surgery depression? Not here.

5) Hot Flashes! Well, yes, and this is one of the biggest disadvantages of castration. Not much you can do but wait it out, keep saying "This Too Shall Pass", and just deal with it. I always carry a large, plain, wooden fan and use it as required. I also joined alt.support.menopause for help and advice.

6) Loss of physical strength. Just about every eunuch will sooner or later look in the mirror and notice how his shoulders have gotten narrower and how he lacks muscle definition. Aside from a vigorous and extensive exercise program, you just have to accept this. With loss of testosterone, muscle turns into fat.

7) Decreased energy. This has also happened, and is also acceptable.

8) Weight gain. It has been stated that the average eunuch will gain 10-50 pounds after castration. In my case I went from 186 to 196 pounds in the first four months after castration, then my diet and exercise program started working and I am down to 182 and hope to go down some more.

9) Body hair. It has thinned out, grows slower, and grows smoother. No big deal one way or the other.

10) Physical appearance. Aside from the narrow shoulders and loss of muscle definition, I can see how the fat has gone to hips and thighs rather then around the waistline. My skin is becoming softer and smoother as a thin layer of fat is deposited under it.

11) Head hair. My bald spot has stopped expanding, but no new hair has grown in to replace the bare areas. No big deal one way or the other.

12) Voice. Despite all the urban legends, the voice will NOT change after castration. So there.

13) Shrinking genitals. I suppose the penis has shrunk a bit now that I no longer have night time erections. No big deal.

14) Mental effects. Nothing to report here except "The Eunuch Calm". I like it.

15) Health risks. Well, yes, and osteoporosis is probably the #1 health risk of being hypogonadal. My physician has me taking whatever tests are needed and encourages my diet and exercise program. An ongoing medical program is essential for those who choose to live as eunuchs.

Any questions?

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, ANDREW!

The results you posted are very similar to mine, except that I screwed up the entire process by taking HRT for a year just as my eunuchism was getting settled in. When I againe allowed my T to diminish to zero a year ago, I underwent another bout of hot flashes and night sweats, much worse than the first. They are dying out now, although I'm told by some that they will never die completely. My wife lost her hormones due to cancer in 1995 and she still has night sweats, but not nearly as serious as she used to.

Hang in there Andrew, it'll be ok.

Happy castration anniversary, and may you have many more happy eunuch years.

I'm sorry to hear about your hot flashes. I seem to have escaped them after my castration, but then I did have a few just after I started taking estrogen last fall. I only had those for a few weeks, and fortunately during the cooler part of the year.

Love,

Love,

I've done quite a bit of research on this topic, and the data from those castrated (surgically or chemically) to control prostate cancer suggests that about two-thirds of them will develop hot flashes. Younger men are more likely to have them, as are the leaner types. They can last 1-5 years, and in rare cases longer then 5 years.

Turns out I was not in the one-third group of men spared the problem of hot flashes. And so it goes.

My goodness, only one in three persons castrated escape the hot flashes, and that's from a sample of prostate patients, meaning older men. I had my castration at age 31, much younger than the average prostate patient, and I am also among the leaner types. If all of this is correct, my chances of hot flashes would have been rated much higher than two in three. I never realized how lucky I was.

And would you believe that Dr. Spector kept trying to tell me that I would never have hot flashes?

I wonder if Dr. Spector knew something the rest of the medical profession does not? Or maybe those statistics of eldery prostate cancer patients, ages 55 and up, may not apply to those under age 55. In any case, CONGRATULATION! on avoiding the hot flashes, and I am not envious...much.

Congratulations, Andrew!

May you have a lot more anniversaries.

Concerning hot flashes: I do have some-

thing similar from time to time. But I

would just call my ones sweat attacks,

and usually I just shrug them off. My

2 euro-cents idea about them is: maybe

it depends also on your heat sensitivity.

Me, I just like heat. I go to the sauna

quite often and really enjoy it. And I

have seen colleages in my former job,

who were just unable to work only ten

minutes in an electronics test heat cell

of only 60 centigrades. Well, I flatly

liked it.

People are different.

Congatulation Andrew and may life be as good for you in the future as you have had this past year and that your hot flashes diminish.

This is logical. Only when you get castrated before your voice lowers in puberty you will keep a more feminine (higher) voice. When you get castrated later, allready having a lower voice, your voice will not rise in pitch again. The effect is only applicable when young, thus.

Andrew,

Congratulations or should we say happy birthday, like they do in AA meetings. You are now 1. :)

Now I have scheduled my castration for Aug 30th but have been chemically castrated sense last fall, December was when I really noticed the change. So what date should I use, 8/31/02 or 12/24/01, the things we ponder. :)

As of 14 June, 13 months after castration, still hot flashing every 60-90 minutes. Sigh...

There is something about your postings that raises my hackles. I note in your other postings an obsession with penectomies? For starters, Drs. Spector and Kimmel do not do hack jobs. For another, I refuse to be considered a side show freak to be drooled over. "Bitch tits" indeed.

I just stumbled over this "ancient" entry, and decided to contribute my experiences.

I had my castration at age 28, and - like Sherry - I am also one of the leaner types. I went for one year without HRT, just to find out what it feels like. Ca. 3 weeks after surgery, I had the first incident of a "wave of hotness"; this repeatedly occurred for about three months, but never really serious, with red flushing or sweating or the like. It was never really unpleasant, but rather curious.

Now, perhaps I was just lucky, but perhaps just by incidence something in my lifestyle helped. I do a lot of work-out and fitness training, and regularly eat very hot and spicy stuff. So perhaps my body was just better trained to cope with thermoregulation?

It would be interesting to know if others would make similar experiences...

I havent had a full physical castration, I was on siterone for over 2 years, brought my level down to about 50, which is castrate level. From month 3-6 I got pretty bad hot flashes, mostly at night. After being on the drugs for 2 years I stopped. was off them for six month, went back on them for a year and during that time the flashes came back for a little while. Stopped the drugs again and my T level never went back above 70. Left guy got atrophied so it was removed, (asked them to do both, but they wouldnt, said it might come back) after surgery had flashes agian but only for a couple of weeks. Think that was just a mind trick though. Level has never gone above 70 since the surgery and usual is around 55-60. So I am full time Eunuch with one non-working testicle just hanging there, bugging the hell out of me.

My experience was similar to what bestofboth described. My hot flashes kicked in within a few days and they weren't too bad...though I'd get some real bed-drenching night sweats. I'm also the "lean" type as he would put it.

Can you be sure that the night sweats are caused by hot flashes as a consequence of castration?

Night sweats are also a classic symptom of tuberculosis and other diseases.

I had these sweats, real bed drenchers too, although they were quite pleasant. However they were upping the laundry bill so I went to a doctor and it turned out to be lymphoma. A course of chemo did the trick though and I have been clear for 17 years now. The oncologist can't quite bring himself to say 'cured.'

I am pretty sure that they were caused by my castration. (cough cough)
