I received a call yesterday that our beloved Jesus A. had to evacuate from one of the fires burning in California.
I won't mention which one, or location, but he is safe and unharmed.

That is both sorrowful to hear (the evacuation) and a blessing to hear (he is safe.)

I know which one, and I hope he ends up ok at the end. The fires are burning through the neighborhood I used to spend my "summer month with dad", after my parents divorced. His house is still standing, but there are houses walking distance away that are gone. Dad hadn't lived there for decades.

This saddens me.
I'm hoping for a good outcome but fire is unpredictable and the worst.

I got an email from Jesus A... He asked me to post this:
"Jesus" and his wife are safe. He's staying with family.
Their home is burnt.
One house in his neighborhood survived the fire.
A neighbor of his died
Another neighbor is in the hospital with burns.
And as he says -- material things can be replaced.

Am glad he and wife are safe, but feel so sorry about the loss of things. It isn't so much about the house or a car, but the photos and little things with attached memories. Thoughts are with you, Jesus.

From the video clips on the news, its a wonder so few have been lost or injured. My prayers go out for the victims.

Moi is safe.
Not threateningly near the canyon country where the Tustin, Anaheim Hills, Orange fires occurred.
About a 30 minute drive inland on Jamboree Rd made famous by this fire.
Inland through the last part of Newport Beach, across the Back Bay Bridge, beyond 2 major lights and into the wastelands called, Irvine.
Northern Irvine morphs into Stepford before becoming Tustin. Into the foothills the road steadily climbs and one is entering Canyon Country.
The first day created quite a smokey sky in that direction.
Moi's solution - Goats. The City of Laguna Beach found goats very cost effective compared to Mexicans.
And there is an increasing population that likes goat meat.
The burning areas have lost their herbivores.

The scale of destruction seems apocalyptical.

I thought when I left I would never return but alas, the fires in California and our friend Jesus has brought me back if only for one post. I have been in contact with Jesus and he and his wife are with their daughter and are okay, the house, cats and everything else gone, a neighbor was killed in the fire and another is in the burn ward.
Items can be replaced, people can not, I am so glad our friend is safe. I know he will post when he can.
River
Aloha.

Thanks so much, River. We in AZ had our own appocalyptic fire where the Granite Mountain Hotshots perished a couple of years ago. The stories of the Yarnell residents were horendous. The heat from the wind-driven flames even baked soil and exfoliated and cracked boulders where the Hotshots died. Everything was on a scale beyond normal human experience. It is gut wrenching when a tranquil rural town literally turns into a crematorium.

Between fires and hurricanes, I think this country is just about done. I think of those poor people in Peurto Rico then I see the damage in Northern California and it looks the same. How depressing, it even gets worse when you know someone personally. #sad.
Thank you all,
Aloha

I spoke with Jesus A. on the phone today.
Other than his wallet, the clothes he had on, his cellular, and the car, EVERYTHING else is gone. Fly-over video of the area shows nothing but an apocalyptic wasteland.
What you see posted here in the nonfiction bibliography post was about half of his materials in his years-long study of eunuchs. Whatever he hadn't shared, including his physical library, is GONE.
He has requested that anyone who was in touch with him should send him an email at the customary address so that he can begin rebuilding his contacts.

We have family in Orange Co. They were among the lucky ones. They're all ok and lost nothing but relayed stories about folks close to them who weren't as fortunate. Friends who have horses told of the near panic getting all their horses to safe territory before the fires came. All the available trailers were used up so neighbors who aren't even horse owners pitched in. They led the horses by tethering them to cars and leading them to an Albertson's parking lot. I hear they all made it out safely.
My sincere condolences to our fellow EAer, Jesus. The important thing is that he and his family are safe but losing neighbors, your home and treasured belongings is heartbreaking. I've had the pleasure of meeting Jesus at the two MoMs I attended and he's a warm, intelligent, genuinely nice guy.
