There is a thread on 'Important New Survey' which Paolo on page 5 tangentially touches on a point about which I have been curious. I don't want to hijack the thread, so I will start a new one.
Paolo refers to the five who make the EA happen. I have only briefly at a MOM met ya'all - that's suthren for ustedes. I seems to me each one is a completely separate type of person. Different professions, different education, different locations and so on. You see groups where everyone is kind of a clone - like the 6 AM old white farts coffeeklatch at McDs. Those I understand because most people like to be around people like themselves. I was once president of a hang gliding club and really cut into my own flying to do a lot of volunteer teaching and grow the club to where we had five gliders for members to rent who could not afford one. I ended up moving to another region after six years, by which time there were some people grumbling about needing new blood. Within a year of my leaving the whole thing fell apart. It turns out that a lot of people who bitch aren't worth squat doing something constructive.
But you guys are different and seem to be able to work together. You have somehow avoided the trajectory of falling out and the whole thing falling apart.
Is there anywhere a thread or podcast on how you different guys from different places got together, formed the EA and how it has managed to stay up and running? I mean, groups form and disappear all the time. Very few survive and grow, especially given the wankers like me and trolls that the subject attracts.

I remember that around 1996 or 1997 there was an irc chatroom. It was EAchat or something like that. Not long after that website EA emerged. I don't know if these are related to eachother.

I've been here nearly since the start. If I remember correctly, The Eunuch Archive was started by Bboy, who passed away many years ago, who I think had a primary interest of penectomy. A staff was gradually brought on, most of the folks you see today. Over the years moderators have come and gone, users have come and gone. There are even a few like me who have been here since the beginning.
The "new blood" conversation has happened here periodically. At some point the people who run this place will not want to, and will need help in making a transition to other leadership. I envision this happening gradually, but whatever happens, it will be however they decide to do it. It will happen if for no other reason we get far enough along that what none of us can outrun, happens.
I agree 1000% with the people bitching, but never wanting to do anything. I was always hearing bitching when I was running a site, but not a single one of those bitches wanted to lift a finger to help. I'd encourage anyone who wants to complain about something on any site, especially those run by a few people trying to benefit many others, is that they do it to provide a service to our small community. They do not have the resources of a Google or Facebook to make programming changes, and keep things as up to date as you'd like. I would get that often. I'd get comments from people that thought it was a simple as clicking a checkbox to make something new and wonderful happen on a website - spoiler! It isn't.
My biggest concern with the EA is the lack of folks stepping up, and by that I don't mean the current administrators. It's the biggest resource for research information that is truthful, but it's on a platform that is different than how younger people consume the Internet today.
The biggest surprise to me these days in the community, no matter where I see it online, is it seems there is a shift from the majority wanting castration and instead they want nullification. That's a sharp change I've seen in just the last five years. I'd say it's at least a 50/50 split now, of course that's just pulled out of the air. But it is definitely going more that direction.
Coming full circle, I think "The Five" work well together, not because of similar regular life backgrounds; they work well because of their common desires surrounding eunuchs and nullification.

I for one am certainly glad that this forum is here with so much information in one place. It definitely has helped to make a difference in my life as a late comer to the castration party. It's been 15 months now since my orchi, and still loving it. Many thanks.

LOLOL! Ok but you may wanna try hedge clippers or some kinda thick branch cutter. I don't think your string trimmer is gonna do much against this tall, thick heavy root. But I'd love to be numb down there and watch you try. I'm sure he'd stand at full attention for you lmao

I've also been here since the very start. Bboy (Brian) used to run the site on his home PC hooked up to a modem on Netcom. I guess that makes me the "Old Lady" of the site. At first it was just a directory of stories, and we used to chat on the efnet IRC server or on AOL chat.

I think that Talula once did a podcast of the origins of the Archive, but not sure what's happened to the audio file. I thought I had a copy of it, and it looks like I don't.

Sometime toward the end of 2000, with the number of members approaching 400, Bboy decided to keep track of everyone by assigning them a serial number. Of those first 400, or so, only five are still active members: Charrett, Kristoff, Paolo, Quillman, and Talula. By the end of 2001, there were over 1500 members of the Eunuch Archive. Only 15 of them are still active -- those original five, plus A-1, Bella, Colin, Dave, EunuchSF, Gerslave, me, kkks, Littledick, and Losethem. The most recent new member, as I write this, is Onlooker, number 120,801.

You know, I just realized that I have no idea how to look that up. Sorry!
But, I do have an anecdotal story about the origins of the very first version of VBulletin. Used to be, we had one horrible forum that was just a constant string of posts. I forget the name of the software. But Talula once called it something like "a rotting pile of dog shit". I'd been chatting with Bboy over the ancient ICQ messaging system, and we decided to try out the first incarnation of VB.
Downloading the trial was easy. It wasn't expensive for the full version, either. Back then. But it was a nightmare to install and configure. So we cracked open the PDF file of directions.
They were only in German. Bad German. As my German was still fresh, I translated them into English. They made no sense. This was before the days of good online translators, too. So I had to confer with Cassell's dictionary. A lot.
"Make sure not to toss your cherries out the window." Literally. This was key to rebooting it after installation. That much I remember. "Without the proper set of cherries in your church..." For the record, the words for "church" and "cherry" in German differ only by one letter! What it meant was to make sure that you had the proper cookies for the VB system to use, and not to delete them from 'some' Windows Server directory.
So the two of us pulled an all-nighter in installing it and getting it running.
I was member #2.
Then it promptly crashed.
So we started all over.
Ah, the good old days.

I was surprised to find I was in the top 12 of long-term folks. And Jesus is right behind me, we signed up about the same time. And like Krister, I have a 3 digit number as my user ID.

I think mine is 254. We had a lot of glitches in the past, which required reloads and some loss of data, so if you have a 3 digit number, you're definitely one of the old-timers!

I've been here a vey long time. I think this is my second user id on the current system. I had a different one or poosibly two over the years before the big crash that led to the new archive being built and the old stories restored and whatnot. I have no idea how long I've been here though. At least 15 years and probably more. alt.binaries.eunuch comes to mind, so many more like 25 years give or take a decade if I'm right that the Usenet boards became the EA..
