No dentist ever asked about that and of course I never mention any health issues to a dentist. If it doesn't pertain to my teeth then it's none of their business

Weakening of the bone of the mandible is a known (though rare) side effect of Fosamax. Your dentist is probably being over cautious. My suggestion would be to telephone the university School of Dentistry nearest you. They should be interested in your case for teaching purposes and you would get first-rate care at a lower price than your regular dentist. You'd just need to put up with a student or three getting their hands in your mouth.

A dental school is a good option - I get all my dental work done at the U of Minnesota Dental School. See my PM I just sent to you, Ralph.

Now for the whole story which I am sure will make you smile. I am so flustrated right now over my general practioner and my dentists.

I was trying to handle some dental work. A crown tooth broke off while I was flossing back in mid August. I went to a dentist to see about getting the root extracted. The dentist quizzed me at length about my Osteo. He started with telling me that Osteo and Fosamax are really bad things. He then quizzed me about how many bones I had broken in the last 5 years. I told him none. He said On come now tell the truth, you have Osteo, so are are suppose to have bones broken every single year. He asked when the last time I had a broken bone and I told him in 1959 I broke my nose. He had to know all the particulars about how, when, where, how, why and more about the broken nose in 1959, like he felt the 1959 broken nose was an effect of my Osteo.. The he spotted my thumb which I had cut half of it off in an accident and had to know who, when, where, why, how that happened, like he wanted to call that as a because of my osteo..

Then he gives me a form to take to my general practioner, who refused to allow the extraction.

Now this tooth was a root canal tooth, so back in August it had very sharp edges and irritated me greatly.. Plus it had these wires that hung down in my mouth and when my tongue played with them it hurt right the tip of the root of the tooth..

It has been a 6-7 weeks now and my tongue has smooth out the edges and the wires are more laid down now and less of an irritant.

I guess becoming a Eunuch is not such a great idea anymore. The dentist community sure does seem to make a great deal of osteo. To them it is an evil and terrible thing. I guess in their mind we should be cursed. In all honestly, I feel like they think I am a leper with leopsy and should be begging at the edge of the city. One thing I have learned for sure, don't tell your dentist any of your medical information. They do not need to know and tell them will only cause you more trouble down the road.

For those of you who do not know anything of the Bible. A person who had leprosy, as people walked by they yelled, "Unclean, Unclean." And that is how Forward Dental is making me feel, because of my Osteo I am unclean, a real leper.

I'm seeing an endocrinologist about general health and she's particularly concerned with osteoporosis, so I'm due for a bone scan shortly. I told her my whole story of how I came to have low T and that I'd never want HRT with T. She is constrained to only proscribing T because estradiol isn't "indicated" for someone born male who isn't transitioning to female (I did that mentally but am fine presenting male). She's very sympathetic, so I'm hoping that if I do experience early signs of bone loss and if I refuse T, that she'll be able to put me on E. A low dose of E should arrest bone loss and that's all I need to retain my feminine characteristics. I already told her that I'm happier than ever now that T is low.

Low level estrogen is available quite readily from Inhouse Pharmacy relatively inexpensively. I get a 3 month supply of 2 mg tablets for about $70US, shipped by US Mail.

I've known OneBallBoi for quite a few years and even had breakfast with him this morning. I have been castrated for over 12 years now. I am have mild osteopina but osteoporosis has been avoided because I also take 2 mg of estrogen most every day, the trade off is now that I have modest breasts. I use AllDayChemist for my estrogen as it is less expensive than Inhouse.

Hi OneBallBoi,

I had osteoporosis that improved to the less severe osteopenia after a few years on Fosamax. My osteo started after strong courses of steroids to control my asthma. There are several reasons why someone can develop osteo. Good luck to you!

Such a small cost for a wonderful drug. I hope for the day when we'll be able to choose which hormones to take for HRT.

It sounds like you should get another dentist. If I got the third degree like you mentioned, I would have changed right away.

In the dentist's defense, and as other's have mentioned, a well-known side effect of bisphosphonates is osteonecrosis of the jaw after dental work. In other words, after drilling in to you your jaw can lose blood flow, die, get gradually replaced with pus, and eventually have to be removed entirely.

It sounds like the dentist should have done a better job of listening to your concerns and explaining his own, but I would suggest he wasn't treating you like a leper because you have osteoporosis, he probably just didn't want to be responsible for such a horrible side effect. For that reason I would strongly recommend not hiding your medical conditions from medical professionals. The attitude of "

Yes the words osteonecrosis was the word mentioned for not touching this tooth for 90 days. When Googled osteonecrosis, it said it was extremely rare. You have to have very weak and brittle bones, you likely have cancer and are receiving Chemo or Radiation and you have poor dental hygiene. None of those things applied to me. My last broken bone was over 60 years ago, so I don't think my bones are brittle at all.

Maybe this being a Eunuch isn't such a good move after all. Nothing is new on my broken tooth and the dentists. Went for a teeth cleaning and hygenist had a fit and said sooner or later it would get infected. Then the dentist came in and said no.. It is a root canal tooth so it is already dead. It can stay just as it is forever. There is no need whatsoever to have it pulled. He wants it left just as it is. I can only assume the dentist knows what he is doing.. He has more years of education then I do. Osteo is a big reason for not becoming a Eunuch. It's too late for me. Think twice or even three times. Perhaps it should stay as fantasy.

Go to another town if necessary. Find a competent, usually younger, different dentist, and get done what you need. The incompetent fool you've been seeing can go back to school or something, or plain go to hell.

That, and he need reported.

About 4 years ago, I was told by one dentist that there was nothing they could do for a broken tooth and Stage 1 gum disease, and that my teeth were so bad I just needed to get dentures.

The local dentist here, younger as Kristoff said, fixed it all in 2 visits and said there was nothing wrong he couldn't fix with a couple more visits. Cleaning, treatments, and a crown. All fixed. No teeth lost. The other guy was reported to the State.

It certainly sounds like your current dentist is an idiot.

Aspen Dental pulled the tooth and now tell me that i need to have all the rest of them pulling and get false teeth. No way.. I am just going to take it one dentist appointment at a time. And pull one tooth at a time as needed. Getting old means you teeth wear out not to say more about being a Eunuch and not have T levels needed. Oh I am happy as I am as a Eunuch.. But Eunuch life styles at not for everyone.. Only a few select few should be Eunuchs.

The difference is not necessarily competence. It is too often integrity.

My mother worked as a receptionist for a dentist for a while. He was damaging teeth so that he could repair, then replace them. Lots of little "accidents", slips with the grinder while removing cavities. He bragged about it after the patients left.

Had a couple of in-laws in another town that lost all their teeth to a dishonest dentist. After they got dentures they learned from acquaintences that he had a reputation for destroying teeth.

Get a different dentist. It sounds like yours is an enemy.

Second opinion said, I have one tooth on the watch list. All the rest of my mouth is just fine as it is. No need for pulling teeth, no need for drilling, Rest at ease.
