EXTORTION!

The Eunuch Archive, particularly the chat room, has been threatened with a "Denial of Service" attack by someone who has demanded a bribe to not do the attack. We believe, based on the spelling and grammatical errors in the demand notes, that the attack, while relying on purloined servers around the world, would be launched from Russia. The attacker demanded that a bribe be paid through the WebMoney on-line payment system, a shady, and entirely anonymous, fund transfer agent headquartered in Belize, though all of its technical support team is in Russia and the actual fund conversion is done in Panama.

Since the Eunuch Archive is hosted for free by another site and the current balance in our account to pay for needed equipment and program up-grades (all from voluntary donations to the cause) is only about $100, even if we were willing to pay extortion, there are no funds to do so.

We can expect occasional disruptions until the extortionist realizes that there is nothing here to gain.

Be patient. The staff scurried around Sunday to make certain that there were adequate backups. The normal, regular backup schedule will be enhanced to make certain that little or nothing is lost should be we off-line from a Denial of Service attack.

If you can't access the Archive, don't panic, and definitely don't forget your towel....

The Chat Room is off line for now. It is of little use when the room is flooded with worthless useless Idiot's. Guess worthless would be to kind to the jack ass. I am still waiting for my first pay check from the site. Being on the staff I all to well know how little money we have. Like many of us we donate our time am money to keep the site running. The chat server is owned my me. It only function is to run the chat room. That is the same with most of the equipment and software license.

The main site has never charged any money from our friends to use the site. How can we give money when there is none to give. This site has been around for so many years as many know. To become a member all you have to do is register. No fee is required. He will find that there is just no money to pay. All he has to do is look at the postings and find that we do not charge anything. Message board and chat room are free.

Anyone with a half of a brain would have checked us out to see if we have any money to steal. Guess he has hit the bottom when trying to hit a nonprofit group. Nonprofit means no money.

At least, the hackers who are threatening this board are basically stupid (extorting a non-profit site). Let's hope their stupidity includes their technical know-how.

I just got off the phone with Kristoff. Our hacker has not yet given up, but has once again demanded a bribe to not try to bring down the Archive. Kristoff reported that the back-up computer that the site uses is in desperate need of replacement as it is not fully functional. Both Talula and IEunuch are currently doing regular backups, Talula on his home computer and IEunuch on a borrowed computer while he is in the U.S. visiting SurfToad and Lilac. I mailed another donation to the cause today.

Now would be a good time for others who appreciate the Archive to make a donation.

Kristoff hopes to have a new (but well-used) computer available by the time of the Midwest MoM so that IE and Talula can configure it properly while they are there.
