Chat Room - Volunteers Needed NOW.

Post by BossTamsin (imported) »

I'm not sure how to put it, but I suppose being forthright/blunt is best:

A volunteer to run the chat room is needed urgently.

Applicants must provide their own computer, which can run 24/7 with high-speed internet connection.

For Windows, software can be provided. For Mac/Linux, you'll need to figure out your own IRC software.

I will provide instructions, and help setting up the room, if needed, and if possible.

Oh, and yes, CountBlah is part of the package. (Well, that's up to the new owner.)

Sooner is better here, people. The deadline is March 20, 2016 at the absolute latest.

Volunteer or not, at that point, the computer here is turned off, and I am retiring.

Any legal requirements? I mean, after all it is a castration fantasy chat room.

PS. wouldn't having few servers interlinked be more resilient? I mean - IRC can join multiple servers into the network, as far as I remember.

Second things first. Yes, it would be better to have more than one server, connected together. The room would be a lot more resilient that way. There was a time when we did have two servers, but unfortunately there isn't anyone at the moment to run a second server, much less more than one.

And in some ways, this would be the elephant in the room. Yes, you would be legally responsible for what goes on in the room. To what extent, I have no idea, and this would be one of the reasons I was so heavy-handed about cutters, and talk of minors. So far, I don't know of any legal issues involving the chat, and I don't believe there have been any to date. The room is relatively obscure, which can help in regards to risks, though. What does this mean for you? Truthfully, I'm not sure, I don't know the laws in your area (or anyone else's, or even really the laws in my area... it's not like I've consulted with a lawyer.)

I so wish that I could help, unfortunately I don't know thing one about all that stuff. I really loved the chat room here when I was able to actually chat there and I do hope you are able to find someone to keep it all up and running, so sorry that I am not able to.

I actually have one more question about it.

How much time it takes to keep it running? (I mean in hours per month)

All I've used is the Windows software. That software is stable, the bot is stable. Generally speaking, it really shouldn't take that much more time than you're already spending in the room to run it. Maybe another hour or so a week just in case issues arise, but honestly, it doesn't even require that much. I mean, you're welcome to put in as much time as you want, but with good Ops and good software, it really shouldn't require that much time at all.

(You can always use Linux chatservers, in which case... I have no idea as to how muhc maintenance they take.)

While I would be thrilled to step up and help the community, I don't have ... to describe my internet connection as "high-speed" and "reliable" would be generous.

I guess put me down for "Better Than Nothing" tier; I'll need to put an old Mac Mini into service, so start talking about what it'll take to get an IRC server running. :p

Hiya would the computer need to be running 24/7 or is it a different computer and I just need to log in every now and again as I don't mind volunteering as long as I know what I'm letting myself in for.

I have 100mb broadband line so internet speed shouldn't be an issue.

I can give you my email if that helps as I'm not on thsi forum all that often at present.

Thanks

Yes, you need a computer running 24/7, cause it will run the chat server itself. (And also a public IP address).

I wouldn't know there, that would definitely be beyond my expertise.

I suppose maybe Blah could be replaced with an Eggdrop bot, but that too is outside my realm of knowledge.

So, is the chat room offically shut down now? That is sad, at one time I know it was real fun to be in there. Fun listening to 2 cutters trying to convince it was OK and safe. And we all blew them off and laughed. times changed.. It appears the chat room is doomed now. It's a different world for sure. Part of life now is being politically correct. What a laugh but it does hold merit today.

It's still there, but it needs a person to run and manage it. Being politically correct has nothing to do with its pending shut down.

Technically, you probably could run the software on a laptop, however those aren't necessarily meant to be running 24/7.
