California fires, is Jesus OK?

Post by Quillman (imported) »

I see from my TV in England the news of those dreadful fires in Canada, and I remember Jesus a while ago now suffering hardship as a consequence which brought me to tears. I really hope that history has not repeated itself as I would not want anything to happen to my friend of twenty years now. Anybody can help please?

Monday morning, it looks like the entire town in California where Jesus lives in a mandatory evacuation zone. I have not heard from him since Saturday morning, as the power company was doing another shut-off for a few days.

It's California not Canada. Spellcheckers are the spawn of satan.

I got an email from Jesus on Saturday that said the Electric Company PG&E was going to shut down their power within two hours of the email because of forecast high winds up to 100 mph.

As far as I can tell from the fir maps and reports (which aren't very good) the fire is east of where Jesus lives. But the weather reports report less than 10% humidity and winds of 80mph. Those winds are why the fires are so hard to control.

It's a waiting game until PG&E restores electric.

added: I'll search the news again in a few hours.

Don't Worry About Moi,

I'm Okay. :D

Orange County canyon county is already burnt out methinks.

I'm imagining the Sepulveda Pass up in flames as the 405 is shut down.

Also after 3 monitored Mountain Lion deaths, these fires are

destroying what little habitat the few remaining ones have

in the Santa Monica mountains.

SUPPORT GRAZING.

Think of all that meat going up in smoke! :(

Thanks for the input folks, my mistake confusing California with Canada my 78 years is to blame I fear. In fairness living on this side of the pond, other countries are not so familiar as they might be, sorry.

However my concern and sympathy are no less sincere.

I've not heard from Jesus, but yes, his town in California is evacuated. I can't imagine the government in California is going to allow the northern California utlity known as PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) keep shutting power off, power on, power off, power on, for long. I'm not generally for government control of things, but I'd certainly make an exception in the case of this power company.

My mother has had her electric turned off twice in the past week. 2 days each time. This, after the power company nearly clear-cut her property to keep trees away from the lines.

Tried calling yesterday, and all I got was the rapid busy signal that is usually indicative of phone service being out. :(

My thought are with all the folks affected by these fires.

We have a programme currently running on BBC "The Americas with Simon Reeve" and this week he was in California.

Featured was the tragedy and devastation of last years fires to have this happen again this year must be a

hard pill to swallow for those residents living in the danger area.

I'm a native of California. It has a varied geography and climates. One part of the state can be quite different than another. I lived in the area where a lot of these fires are prone to happen. We've not had it go through where my mother presently lives, but it's come close a few times.

A joke among Californians is that California only has two seasons - Fire and mudslide. Right now it's fire season, it will be mudslide season starting in a month or so.

I went to the news websites I could find and even the PG&E websites. No word on restoration of electric power. PG&E did say that after the wind and fire threat passes, they have 48 hours to inspect the lines before restoring power.

Think of that - PG&E didn't keep the lines in good repair, not shut off the electricity and give themselves 24 hours after the threat to inspect the lines. Just so they can't be sued again.

I haven't harsh enough curse words for that type of stupidity

That was because they were stupid enough to shingle their roof with wood. I doubt it ever worked.

My mother has been cussing a lot lately. Fortunately it has not been hot at her house. She has a generator big enough to run one of her refrigerators at a time. She's treating it like when her power goes out for a huge snow storm. Don't open the fridge unless you have to, and turn the generator on long enough each time to "top off" the cold in the fridge. She has two fridges and one freezer to do this with. Though I can imagine the freezer would stay cold through a nuclear blast, it's so full of stuff. It's a food iceberg in there.

As I mentioned before... Not a big fan of the government taking over private companies, but this one has been so mismanaged and so critical, I'd make an exception in this case. I'd envision the state taking it over, issuing bonds to get these upgrades done, then selling it off (along with the bond debt) to a new company made up of people WHO ARE NOT presently, or in the past 20 years, been in any management position at PG&E.

I just heard from him. He's fine. Power just came back on there around 5PM EST. The winds are blowing the other direction now, so for the moment, he's safe.

Not sure if it makes sense for him, but he may want to invest in some solar panels. Sounds like most of California needs them.

Does California or their power company offer an incentive to install solar?

Thank you all for your concern. We were without power, but we still had water. My wife refused to budge during the "Mandatory Evacuation" of the western half of our county. Half the neighborhood stayed and we organized in case we needed to take quick action. I'll know more tonight when I can count the Halloween crowd. I have candy for about 1700 kids (what was needed last year). If we have a couple of hundred kids, I'll know that things are getting back to normal.

Yes, California does. I believe the states bordering directly to the east of them do not, though Nevada may have changed that recently. They were actually making it prohibitively expensive to install, so nobody would do it.

But we're talking California... Yes, but you still have to pay something for it. It's not like it's a freebie or anything.
