Off to Norway

Post by kristoff »

In a few hours I am leaving for a 9 day trip to Norway. Hope to see family. Going to be in Oslo for 3 days, then 1 day in Flam, and 4 days in Bergen. Have to arrange the transfer of my title to a house in Bergen, to a relative yet to be determined. If anyone local wishes to meet up, send me a message on the boards here. I will have a computer with me, so I should be able to be on the boards. Later....

Enjoy.

This is an eCard from Minneapolis. Totally unplanned. I got a bug at a conference and left early rather than cough on a bus. We ended up coming thru Minneapolis. Wife was following GPS and could not get into an exit to left because of traffic, so we went straight and got a night time tour of west and south Minneapolis. When we finally got to out motel on the south side I made a comment to the guy about the sphagetti highway plan. He said that there was one route that dumps you into a parking lot. Once on it, you could only go into the parking lot and pay the parking fee to get out and get back on the freeway. That happened to him three times before he learned better. Ah planning.

I would gloat that out west we do it better except if you are going north on I-17 and get off at Camp Verde for McDs, you can only right exit from McDs. One of those little concrete dividers keeps you from committing the sin of an uncontrolled left turn. So you go a mile to the first break in the safety divider. You can only go left - no Uturn. Then another mile and you can turn left into a shopping center to turn around and head back. One mile to get you back where a right puts the concrete divider on the left and after another mile (count them, four miles later) you pass McDs on the left.

That is on tomorrow's tour agenda.

Saw the park today. Damn it is huge and somewhat hilly. A long walk for someone on a cane, but I got some good pix. We toured all over Oslo, stopping and looking here and there, getting out and going in places. Five and a half hours. I am on the verge of exhaustion - Especially after 14 hours of flight time and hanging out at airports in Minneapolis, Keflovik, and Oslo. But I am going to get some good food, and buy and mail some post cards.

All I'd say is... You are aware you can literally drive all the way around a traffic circle, exiting in whatever direction you wish, and there is such a circle 500 feet from the McDonald's in said direction of 4 miles of driving. ;)

The tour bus I was on could only turn right exiting McDs. Maybe there is a different exit or maybe they have added one of those infamous traffic circles since. I have not had a reason to go to that McDs since.

They serve the same crap as they do in the US. I didn't see any signs of lutefisk, though I couldn't detect its foul smell if it was there (lost my sense of smell to Covid). Fortunately, I only eat McD's about once every 3 or 4 months, but only if the kitchen is depleted at home.

Never had Lutefisk, but I have had Icelandic rotted shark, which I'm told is similar...

My GF and I did a trip to Iceland, Scotland and the UK, and the Netherlands many years ago before I got hurt... We flew Air Iceland which I highly recommend, because of their doing hub & spoke out of Reykjavik, which breaks up the long flight and gives you a chance to stretch your legs. use a real restroom, and so on... They also let you stay up to 5 days at no extra air fair (smart business, as they bought a big chunk of the Icelandic tourism industry when they started making the offer)

Iceland is a very interesting place - the only spot in the world where you can DRIVE from Europe to North America... It has a very stark beauty and very friendly folks. Reykjavik is a very walkable city that also has some neat sculpture, I was particularly fond of the 'Tomb of the Unknown Bureaucrat' - good humor in that one...

If you are still local, I am at Thon Hotel Opera, and have the day free. Send me a PM or here and we can connect. Sorry to take so long to respond, past couple of days have been very busy.

Some traditional Norwegian dishes:

Smalahove med kålrotstappe = Sheephead with turnip stew

Fårikål = Sheep in cabbage

Pinnekjøtt _ Stickmeat, christmasfood

Lungemos = Mashed lungs

Lumpe

Raspeball/ kompe/ potetball

Brunost = Brown cheese

Vaffelkake

Rømmegrøt

Kvæfjordskake

Bon appetite

Norwegians don't bomb baby whales, they eat them.

Whale meat can be bought in ordinary supermarkets and food stores.
