I should have mentioned that growing up we always had dogs, cats, fish, a bird and a chicken or two. I also pet sit for my sister and a friend so I am up to the task. Oh and in my psofessional life I am a caregiver to the elderly. So I think I have the skills.

My concern about breed and size is due to the fact I live in an apartment. The apartment is a little over 1,000 sq. ft. with two bedrooms. The reason I worry about a chewer is my antiques.

I live on the second floor so taking the dog for a walks would raise my exercise level. Picking up poop would cause me to bend over for more exercise. Luckily my sister would pet sit if I traveled.

I guess I need to start visiting the shelter to see if I bond with any dogs. I am a sucker for sad eyes. Being soft hearted I might want to bring several home.

There is no joy in my life that exceeds that which is brought to me by my dog. She has been with me since she was 5 weeks old, and will be 5 years this sunday. Her devotion to me is amazing. The greeting I get when I come home is as though I have been gone for days, even if its been just an hour.

Gabby snuggles up to me and looks at me as though her world totally revolves around me. We play together, we eat together, and at night she curls up at my feet on the bed.

I have 12 coming to celebrate her birthday on sunday.

A dog in your life is the best therapy for lonliness.

Thanks Raymar for your post. I agree that a dog will bring joy to my life and offset the lonliness. As of now it is only the dust bunnies that are glad to see me.

If you finally decide to have a dog, please adopt from your local shelter. You'd be amazed to see how many pure-breed, well-behaved and trained dogs have been turned in. :( Also, here's a generality for you, YMMV: In my experience, mixed-breed mutts make the smartest, most loyal and lovable pets.

I do want a rescue dog from a shelter. All my dogs have been mixed breeds but for a Collie I had once. She was so sweet and patient that I could take her to a class of young children with disabilities and they would have fun dressing her up. The kids loved it when she had her coat, purse, hat and sumglasses. They would pose with her and I would take their pictures. I want a sweet gentle dog.

I would never buy a dog from a store because I will not support a puppy mill.

Well I went to the Humane Society today and began the process to adopt. Then I went to the rental office to let them know I was going to have a furry roommate. Next of course if I am approved for adoption I need to buy food and toys, collar and leash, and maybe a doggie bed. Sadly I think my collars would be too large for the dog.

I was impressed by the adoption process. I had to give references along with the phone number of the rental office. They will call to make sure I live in a pet friendly apartment. They even asked where it would sleep and I answered "anywhere it wants to" but they meant indoors or out. I hope they do not call back and say I am not smart enough for a dog.

Seeing all those dogs behind bars reminded me of my last relationship. I hope the dog is not pretending to like me just to get sprung. I can imagine bringing it home only for it to lie in the corner and ignore me. I can imagine it barking "leave me alone but keep my dog bowl filled, bitch". One dog in particular seemed rather affectionate and needy. My sister is going with me later to look at all of them again. Oh I hope I am better at choosing a dog than I am choosing a man.

Is it crazy to be this nervous about choosing a pet?

My sister and I went back to see the dogs and I made my choice. Tomorrow I will be bringing home a 3 year old neutered male Beagle that was unfortunately named Regal. When I made the second trip back and I entered all the dogs were barking for attention but Regal. He just wagged his tail and smiled. His smile won me over.

Ya I have to deal with the name. He can be Regal but I am the Queen. One of my favorite audio companies from England is Rega so I may drop the L.

Ah he is so cute. We are having so much fun. He is currently chewing on my Build-a-Bear bear. I bought him a toy but he likes stuffed animals. Luckily I am not too macho to have stuffed animals. LOL I loved filing out the paper work because I was listed as the adoptive parent.

He is currently climbing on the computer desk trying to type hello. I hope I get over the stage of thinking everything he does is cute. I am terrible at discipline. Which is why it was good for me not to have children. He is house trained and responds well to no. I hope he is tired because I am about exhausted. I think he is glad to be home.

Just watch how much he eats.

Beagles love to eat. And make sure he has plenty of HIS toys to chew up, so he doesn't go after YOUR toys!

Cute, Tugon....I have a mutt, Molly, who is now 9 years old...I adopted her from a woman who saved dogs from euthanasia. She's half beagle and half shi tzu...Have fun....dragonfly

You are correct and I changed his name to Corky. Named him after someone good from my past. He and I are doing well so far. I am doing a lot more walking than I thought I would with him but that is also good for me. My sister and her boyfriend are coming over while I am at work and taking him for walks. He is a lot of fun but I have a lot to learn about him and training a dog.

Plix, Corky sure loved meeting you. He is very affectionate but seemed to kick it up a notch for you. You can visit him any time.

Tomorrow may be an interesting day. The site Male Survivor will be in Columbus at OSU. I am trying to get my nerve up to attend. I find it easy to post about abuse, incest and adult rape on the EA and Male Survivor but to be face to face in a room full of strangers will be tough.

I do think it would be beneficial to make some connections with others that had been abused. Much like the EA is a great place to share for us as eunuchs or want to be's because we understand each other. I would enjoy having friends that are also working through the same issues. Many good people have allowed me to share but I am glad to say they could not relate. On one hand I hate that this has happened to others.

I am sure I will post when I return home. I plan on this time to be very beneficial. Here's hoping.

I am now having doubts about attending the Male Survivor seminar. I am wondering if it would be of any help at this point in my life to rehash any of it. I think I have worked through it as much as I can and better leave it where it is.

I asy to know fully how you feel about being in a room full of strangers, and telling them things that you find very hard to talk about,it is easy to just write about what was done, when o one knows who you are.

For i find it easy to talk about things that were done to me,in this way and not have to look at others who dont know me,abuse and adult rape are very tought things to talk about, what ever you decide to do the very best of luck to you my friend.

I am not a hypochondriac but I wonder if I am a mental health hypochondriac. One of my diagnosis for myself is that I think I have attachment disorder. I have trouble with relationships and when rejected by someone I easily write them off. I think from a lack of bonding and early abuse I never developed the ability to attach.

Recently I responded to a facebook post by my cousin's wife. She is super Catholic, super Republican and quotes from Ayn Rand. I responded with Matthew 19:24 and received a letter in the mail from my cousin. He accused me of being disloyal to the family and attacking his wife on facebook. He said that if I did not like them to leave them alone. That was enough and I am leaving them alone. I feel no sense of loss. I do not want to get into much detail but when his mother was in an accident and his father died I was very much there for family.

I understand when I have friends who call me frequently to talk about themselves with no real interest in how I feel or think. I offer advice and thoughts that I can tell are not acknowledged until someone more respected agrees. I know why those friendships end but family can end as quickly. I do have some friends from elementary school and other times of my life that are important.

I guess what I am saying is I feel no sense of loss. I think I should feel more but I often think less assholes in my life the better. When my grandmother died I felt a sense of relief. When my father died I felt a sense of safety and when my mother died I thought no more criticism. I have become happier without the negativity and disappointment from family. Now that my cousin and his wife have unfriended me on facebook I have unfriended them in life.

Or maybe it is my abandonment issues?

My friend, assholes are assholes, and there is just no fixing them. You simply exercised judgment!

Thank you that means so much coming from you. I tend to think the problem is with me but it could not always be me. You are correct they are assholes.
