The Archive Needs You!
As much as I don't want to do this, I'm afraid it's become somewhat necessary. In order for the EA to keep improving and upgrading the way we have planned, we need your help.
Specifically, we are seeking donations. I know, I know. It's an evil word. Now we haven't asked for much in the past, and have provided most of those reading uncounted hours of entertainment.
I guarantee that all the money donated will go towards the archive, and help make this place even better.
For those of you who wish to donate, PayPal is preferred, and the email address to use is [email protected], other arrangements are accepted, please message me if you would prefer alternate methods.
Include your user name, and you will even get a nice big public thankyou, like Jesus and SurfToad are!

What improvements will these new found funds purchase?
When I buy, I like to know what I buy...
Keep up the good work.

Well, the first priority is a hard drive or two and a burner for a computer handling the backup of the EA server to make sure nothing like last time happens again.Robby (imported) wrote: Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:41 pm I think asking for donations is acceptable.

After that, I need to find a way to get a book on MySQL so I can move on and start upgrading the rest of the archive, and possibly a book on Linux/Apache so I can do the administration work and stop upsetting the very kind folks at BME.

Excuuuse me. But shouldn't Administrator as yourself have the answers instead of the questions? You know I am not from here. H. :)Huevon,
We are an open group and like to discuss the happenings here at the Archive. You may have overlooked the intent of the post...
Openness and dissemination of information is good for our membership.
Hope this explaination helps in your understanding of our modi operandi.

Anyone interested in helping IE in the effort to fortify the backbone of the Archive, please step up to the plate.BossTamsin (imported) wrote: Wed Sep 27, 2006 1:39 pm Well, the first priority is a hard drive or two and a burner for a computer handling the backup of the EA server to make sure nothing like last time happens again.

Re: The Archive Needs You!
This is my area of expertise, maybe I can donate some hardware or some expertise whereas cash is in short supply right now....
Linux/Apache - overrated...complicated for beginners....
MYSQL - cool......
Windows 2003, just as or moreso secure (When I'm done with it). Not to mention easy if you need assistance it can be done remotely ..
I secure these for the gov, got over 70 of them in my farm.
Let me know how I can help ...:)The backup server will be hosted at my house. (Offsite backups are very good.)
As for the software, the archive is already running (and AFAIK has run for the last 6+ years) on a LAMP server. We do have outside help available for major repairs to the server hardware, and a gentleman from BME has been generous enough to set up and secure a linux/apache base, but he is unable to do some of the day-to-day work required in maintaining a server.
If you would prefer to donate actual hardware, that's fine. Message me, and we can discuss it further.

Well, I certainly don't deserve any thanks LOL, I lost a bet to A-1 (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showpos ... stcount=26) in the political forums, and was debating a donation anyway.
When I saw this thread, I realized I had no longer had any excuses
No further mention of me is needed, but thanks! LOL

IE,
The last banknote you found in an evelope from me was to lubricate the ArchivIST, not the ArchivE.
I stuck a pair of them in an envelope to you today to help with the servers and other means to help keep the ArKive afloat.

Hey, where do we get to acknowledge everything YOU have done so far? I don't see a mention of what you have put in and how much You have done. This is already back to where it was, with the exception of the personals section, which we dearly miss for its comic relief value. But You have done so much to this point that it should be mentioned somewhere.
As far as what ever you need, i got your paypal and your back. You know that.

Dear IEunuch,
I have an internal IDE HP CD-writer 9300 series CD burner that is in prefect working condition just sitting around doing nothing. If you can use it just let me know and I'll be more than happy to donate it to the cause.
If you can use it, send me a PM with you shipping information and I'll send it along to you.

Re: The Archive Needs You!
Come one, come all, be the first in your block to help fund the continued efficiency of the Eunuch Archive. IEunuch put the Stotyboard back together and now he needs hardware and cash to keep the EA running.
Dig deep you misers, empty your piggy banks, cash in your TCD's, withdraw some savings and help us save the EA from oblivion.
The EA is akin to PBS, it needs individual support as no corporations are going to come to our aid.
I, personally, sent IE my entire net worth. However, if I pay the postage, IE owes me 7 cents.
If you have $10, $100 or more to spare, our site needs it. Where else can we go if the EA closes?

Re: The Archive Needs You!
There is no need to give me special thanks. I enjoy the Archive and want to see it continue.
If everyone who enjoys comming here donated a small amount, I'm sure it would go a long way in helping to keep things running.
Many thanks to IEunuch for his hard work.

Re: The Archive Needs You!
I am still poor but will reiterate the offer I've made many times in the past: IE, I know MySQL pretty well, and am happy to help out with technical stuff.
Also, a book on MySQL is a waste of money, truthfully. The entire manual is online (in wiki format, no less, so you get all the nice comments from real people when some section is crappy, or they post neat tips and tricks) and between that and a basic understanding of SQL in general, you ought to be fine. MySQL is the easiest database to administer I've ever worked with.

Re: The Archive Needs You!
While this my sound strange as have spent many a moon requesting donations (thank you all so very much for helping out), I have sent one in also.
What most here know already is that The Archive consists of more than one or two folk. No, we are a community and out of that community there are many whom volunteer thier time, money, and effort, to keep it going, write for it, and promote it.
Who would have ever thought we needed Media Directors, but we do now and have two who wonderfully volunteer thier time.
IE and I have been working out several things and it is best for The Archive to work itself in a different fashion. One even more globally and that is what we are striving for.
Kudo's to IE and all his very hard work! He really deserves a standing ovation for what he has done!!!!!
Lets hear it for IE!!!! I'll be the first to bow to him because he really does deserve it.

Re: The Archive Needs You!
Bow and smiles to one and all! Especiall Tal and IE! And all other donators!!
I had a strange thought yesterday. I was wondering how cool it would be to have like ... some kind of way of seeing how much we'd managed to raise? I just wonder if it would help boost morale to actually be able to see the progress, set targets, and perhaps help encourage regular donations in the process? Hehe just a thinking out loud I suppose!
I'm with Christina on that one! Small, but regular donations from everyone is probably the best way to go!
Keep up the good work, all!! And thank you!

i am all for dues though and will be the first to set up an auto pay through paypal to either IEunuch or Talula. i have both of them in my paypal roll-a-dex.

Dues for this site are out of the question unless you are thinking of sending all the money to BME... our benefactor. BME has paid the communications bill for this site for many, many years. We owe BME a lot more than you may think...
Hopefully we won't be seeing the "dues" suggestion again.
Thanks,

???Kangan,
Hopefully you are not suggesting E.A. is the sort of site to lose connections.
For years E.A. has dedicated most of it's resources to education. Most contributors to the message board are interested in education, either finding information or providing. Of course there is the story board partition featuring fantasy and futurism. We tend to think of this section as a virtual library.
