Felix Spector's last legacy and a new MoM

Post by jeff_macadams (imported) »

Hello all. As most of you know now I was Dr. Felix Spector's partner at the end of his life. Tugon and I live near each other and have become friends. We have been tossing an idea about. At the end of Felix' life he and I came to Ohio and rescued a 150 year old Victorian mansion that had been built by my great-great-grandfather. My ancestor had been a conductor on the "Underground Railroad" and the house had been a "station." Felix was a great proponent of civil rights (having campaigned for civil rights for many minorities throughout his life - including our minority) and liked the idea of saving the old estate and dedicating it, in part, toward education and awareness of civil rights (the Underground Railroad having been America's first civil rights movement).

Our idea (Tugon and myself) was to offer the estate for a Meeting of Members (not to interfere with the usual MoM) at the estate. In this way members of our community could see the good works Felix was involved in toward the end of his life and perhaps get to know him a little better in this way. I have spoken with my V.P. and the organization that owns the estate would be happy to host this event. There is tons of room in the 9500 square foot house for a giant eunuch slumber party ;)

So this is an open call for opinions, advice and help toward this end.

Cheers!

That would be a most welcome and a great tribute to Doctor Spector. The whole idea of MOM's is to get like minded people together. Some of the early members of this group are students of Doctor Spector. It could be a reunion for many. For the rest just another great time to meet others. Having meetings in different locations is what the MOM's is all about. I would be happy to work with you on putting together a MOM. With my plans of moving this spring, I have not been setting dates too fast this year. Your location sounds like it has some real possibilities.

You know I will be in attendance. I think it will be wonderful to have everyone under one roof. We can talk the night away. We can prepare meals in the kitchen and of course there are enough grounds for a cookout and a tent for seating and shade.

If there is any way that I can attend, I will; and I usually get what I set about doing. Would look forward to it and meetin you, as well as seeing some folks along the way!

What part of Ohio? For my purpose, the nearest large Ohio city is good enough...

I know Marietta is 5 hours from where I live, but the rest would be a bit of a stretch. If it's in southeastern Ohio, I might be able to swing it, but if not I'll have to think about it.

Is this by any chance along an Amtrak route? It would be nice to take the train from out west to Chicago and then on to Ohio if possible.

Yes indeed, what part of Ohio? In spite of having been a member for a number of years now, have not met anyone here and would love to do so. If I can make it at all, I want to be there.

I think we should likely plan to make the first event sometime in 2009. We should try to keep details about this (and any MoM) somewhat confidential. Anyone who wants more info about the location, the estate, etc., please PM me. Autumn here can be very pretty. We are in the Appalachian foothills of Southeastern Ohio.

Cheers!

2009 :(:(:(

We can accommodate sooner if there is interest to do so in 2008. Everyone let me know. I thought with the currently planned MoM in 2008 it might be too much in one year. Really on our end it's just a matter of reserving the estate for the weekend in question.

The nearest AmTrak station is in Akron. We would be happy to do a pick up at the station though.

One thing I miss about the UK - railways!!!!! The US needs to grab a clue!

To Akron on a train would be cool. I've never ridden Amtrak and would like to at least once in my life. Greyhound sucks, but wouldn't be too bad of a ride since I live in Michigan.

Alright. Looks like we have chosen a date which would work best for the estate and would (hopefully) not conflict with any other MoM. May 2009 for the first MoM at the estate. I'm thinking 9 & 10 May.

With 29 rooms we could certainly provide accommodation for all members staying at the home. There are a lot of attractions nearby and Columbus is only about 45 minutes away as well.

Sounds like a great choice. The rainy days of spring should be over and before the hot days of summer. I of course will be there.
