big type

Post by transward (imported) »

I notice of late that there seems to be a GIANT TYPE RACE going on in the forums. At first it was an occasional thing by one or two posters, but now more and more are doing it, and the type keeps getting bigger and people are now adding color and fancy fonts, bold all capitols being a given. On several posts with gargantuan bold type, there is a note added that the moderator had edited the post to reduce the size of the type. (how big was it before?)

Since the days of the John Birch Society and None Dare Call I Treason, I have been taught that writing in all capitols is the written equivalent of screaming at the top of your lungs. Making the type bigger with color is only amplifying the screams. There is a time and a place for screaming, when someone's house is on fire or you are being raped comes to mind, but if you scream everything you say them people will quickly adopt the old adage that a loud voice is a sign of a disordered mind and ignore you. This is a double bind for the mentally ill who wander around ranting at the top of their voices. They yell because people ignore them and people ignore them because they are ranting at the top of their voices.

I mean this as no attack of anybody, but I would like to request a little more restraint in the use of big type, please. My mental ears thank you.

I had to get a bigger monitor in order to fit the large fonts. --FLO--

I'm one of the culprits and I hang my head in shame. I was so pleased when I learned how to make large type I couldn't resist trying it out.

Sorry.

That's OK. Some times one just has to!

Sometimes it is more effective to whisper.

DAMNIT! I wish like everything that I could dispell that MYTH!

Please, "hear me out" (or read me out) on this one...

Back in the stoneage, when I first enlisted in Uncle Sam's Yacht Club (navy), I worked sometimes in the communications center, seriously, we used very old (designed during WW II) teletypes and "chad tape." Back then, everything sent in a message was in "all caps" or "upper case" letters, you never had to ask whether you should or should not capatalize this or that, even our typewritters had no "lower case" letters. Well, I sort of got to like things that way, seriously, it makes everything easier to read.

Now, seriously, my eyes are getting bad, it really really sucks but that is just the way it is. If I were rich enough, I would go see a eye doctor and get glasses/contacts/laser surgery/ or whatever and fix this problem, but you know what? I CANNOT AFFORD IT!

So even though you and so many others percieve writing in "all caps" as yelling, I do not and actually prefer all caps.

I ALSO WOULD BE EVER SO GRATEFUL AND HAPPY IF PEOPLE WHO SPEAK TO ME WOULD QUIT MUMBLING AND LOOK AT ME AND SPEAK CLEARLY WHEN THEY SPEAK TO ME!! (Sorry, I couldn't resist going "all caps" on that statement!) Seriously, I have to say "what?" about twenty or more times a day. I have always hated mumblers even when I was a child, and invariably it is the MUMBLER who acts like they are the injured/offended party when you ask them to speak clearly, yet THEY are, in my honest opinion, wanting to create confusion in their communication with other people.

I guess I should just "set the font on my browser" to a larger size, but damnit, I honestly cannot remember where that damn setting is... somewhere under "properties?" or "my computer?" Hell, I am just too damn old!

Right click desktop. Left on properties. Click settings. Reset screen resolution. I keep mine fairly large - good for severe myopia. Half deaf too, but still hate SCREAMING. Thanks.

You might try Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/), "the best browser nobody is using." Hit the "+" key and text enlarges, hit the "-" key and it reduces. You can toggle word wrap on or off, and if you want you can just highlight a block of text and hit the speech button and it will read it to you. Great for those of whose eyes are not as young as they were.

Firefox does that, too, except you hold down the Ctrl key while typing the + or -.
