I just spent the last 90 minutes with an attorney from a competing conservatorship firm and he convinced me to try it his way and not
use the one mom's lawyer reccommended.
This guy says I should ask the court to be mom's financial conservator despite the fact I can't get ther bond.
He says he thought a $300,000 bond was unnecessary and that a $20,000 bond was closer to being more likely.
His office will drive me to court Monday morning so I won't have to take a taxi costing up to $25 each way.
He said he would personally buy me a pair of dress slacks and a dress shirt so I looked more presentable in court.
He did say my house was to cluttered and needed a thourough cleaning before it might be safe enough for mom to return.
This attorney quoted me no fees of any kind. (thus far)
On a different subject, Mom's doctor called me today saying:
* I want to keep here at hospital for another week or so and
* She might have to go to a nursing home he recommended for ten more days. That would give me time to clean my house to most people's satisfaction.

As far as "Minor Miracles" go, the toilet began leaking just as fast in the same place five hours after the plumber left.
Ain't life a kick in the head. I'll call the plumber on Monday and see what he'll do about it, hopefully for free, ha ha.

You have to consider what you are going to do when you no longer have your mother with you. You need to think about what goals you have for yourself.

Only thing I know for sure is that I'll be looking for a job, any job, as fast as possible, before the utilities start going off one by one.

I understand. I just over drafted my bank account. Living on much less than I once did is a trick I still have not mastered. The electric bill came due earlier than I expected. The automobile insurance premium went up fifteen dollars.
I admire you taking care of your mother. Your narrative of your adventures have become the most important reason I visit our forum.

I'm in full agreement with Blaise on this point.
I'd also be a bit concerned about an attorney who doesn't tell you his fee up front.... There are lots of predators out there who go after old folks.

I am also worried about that. You do have some assets that you need to protect.

I have to be in court at 10:30am tomorrow but, I'm more optimistic about it now than I have been for weeks.
I don't have to worry about leaving mom alone here at the house because she's in the hospital and will be there probably another week.
I don't have to spend up to $25 to take a taxi to the neighboring town where the court is because the attorney is sending someone to drive me.
And...It seems I now have an attorney. He knocked on my door tonight about 10:00pm. He had been playing basketball and was still in his uniform.
He brought me new shoes, a dress shirt, dress slacks, 6 pairs of socks and two pair of bluejeans.
I agreed to allow him to be my attorney. Hell, at this point in time, I would have sold my soul to Satan himself for good legal advice. Then again, maybe I did.
At least I'll arrive in court on time, dressed appropriately and represented by legal counsel. That's more than I was sure of several days ago.
Wish me luck. Tomorrow, after I get out of court and go see my mom, I tell you all what happened at my inquisition, I mean, hearing
Now if I can only get to sleep tonight.

Take care. I hope you slept well. You have needed legal counsel. I am glad you have it.

Watch out he doesn't make some maneuver in court to attach your mother's estate to pay his fees.

The judge was very polite and not anything like that abrasive Judge Judy on television. Both attorneys, mom's and mine, asked for a continuance till mom was feeling better. The next hearing is in late January.
I have until then to get four major changes done to my house:
1. A general housecleaning of each room.
2. Replacing the rug that covers the livingroom, dining room, my bedroom and the den. Both attorneys agreed my rug had died many years ago and needed to be buried.
3. Painting the Living Room, Dining room and kitchen.
4. Replacing the tile floor in the kitchen which has an unsightly gap in it.
My attorney reccommended I try a list of free or low cost public agencies to see which of the four they could help with.
Jack, my attorney, drove me to see mom after court and talked to her for a minute. She seemed to like him too.
So far, so good. I have much to get accomplished.
On the way to driving me home, Jack bought bought me a new belt for my vacxumn cleaner and my lunch for two days.

If this is a criminal offence and since (I presume) you haven't taken a guilty plea, you are entitled to demand a trial (with a jury if you wish) or a hearing before a magistrate or hearing examiner. You stand a better chance of dismissal or reduction before an examiner if you have that choice. At any rate, unless California is even stranger than I think, you do not have to accept the decision from the collections office unless you admit guilt. Telling you to abandon your mother and go to work is typical of the sort of ploy used to collect bills by private collection agencies. Implied threats and intimidation are their only job skills. Good luck whatever you decide to do. The threat of your story going to the news media (what a public relations nightmare!) may help. If that doesn't work find the lowest form of T.V. tabloid local news and give them the story. --FLO--
Speaking my my outrageous fine, no I haven't been to court or nor have I been ordered to appear in one, yet.
Today, I received an order from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to turn in my Driver's License before December 19, 2007. I was also informed that if I am caught driving after that date, my non-existant vehicle can be impounded and I could be arrested, fined and jailed.
As I have no vehicle to drive, and no means of paying the approximately $1,231 in fines, I seriously doubt I'll been on the highways anytime soon except as a passenger on a city owned bus or hoofing it as I have for many weeks thought it seems longer.
Since I had already told Central Collections on numerous occasions that I have no income, this letter from DMV was no suprise. Ever since my car caught fire and became toast I have been walking and or taking the city busses.

From the fire to a position "between a rock and a hard place."
The hospital called today saying they were transferring mom to a temporary nursing home for ten days or so till she builds up her strength.
The nursing facility in Grand Terrace, where mom is supposed to go to, just called saying mom used up all her Blue Shield insurance, that her Medi-Cal is not valid and the medicare will only pay part of it leaving me a copay of $120 a day. No way can I afford to go into debt again.
I called the hospital asking them NOT to send mom to the the facility in Grand Terrace and they put me on hold till the Case Worker came on the line. The Case Worker says she "thinks" she can get Medi-Cal back in force to cover most of mom's short stay in Grand Terrace.
Theoritically, a case worker is going to call me and then come out to my house to get some records or data to restart Medi-Cal, so mom will have from partial to full coverage.
The hard place was bad enough so I just hope the rock isn't hot magma

I missed court today because I did not have gasoline to get there. So I now have a warrant for my arrest. I will have to deal with it next week. I do not have money this month.

Maybe next week when I tell the judge I can't afford to pay that old nursing home bill, the new nursing home bill, new carpeting, new kitchen flooring and an inside paint job, we can share a cell together.
Now, if only you looked liked Paris Hilton

Mondays can be interesting.
Tomorrow at 1:15pm I'm due in Small Claims Court as I am being sued by Waterman Convelesant Home because mom overstayed her visit there a year ago and I signed her in.
I guess I'll find out if they can get "blood out of a stone."

I agreed to pay the nursing home $150 on the first of every month starting in December. I guess I'll learn to appreciate the finer qualities of ramen as opposed to being a carnivore. Next month will be especially tight as my first delinquent property tax payment of $140 is due as well.
I wonder if I can claim my cat and dog as dependents.

Each day seems to have negatives and positives, no wonder I feel like a run down battery. Tomorrow, for istance, has one of each:
NEGATIVE - I get easily confused on busses as it is and found out today that it takes 4 different busses to go visit my mom at the nursing home her doctor has her at now and hence four different busses back. Eight different busses in one day is too much for my 61 year old brain. I'd walk it but I doubt I could cover 12-15 miles in a day...and that's just one way.
POSITIVE - It takes only a single bus ride tomorrow to go meet with the social worker at Community Hospital who "says" she can restart Mom's Medi-Cal as long as I bring in her Driver's license. old Medi-Cal card, Social Security Card, Blue Shield Insurance card, a copy of her bank statement, her birth certificate, her passport and a few other miscellaneous documents.
Hopefully, if this social worker is pleased with what she sees, mom's stay at the nursing home will be at least partially covered and I won't end up owing another huge debt. However, her doctor signed her into this one. I had nothing to do with it.
