I'm just home from nine days on the road that included four days of an incredible conference on sex, gender, and sexual orientation: the Fifth Quinquennial Conference on the Puzzle of Sexual Orientation. It happens once every five years and is a very small group invited to an isolated location so that there is nothing to do except talk with one another about what has been accomplished in research on sexual orientation in the previous five years and to lay out topics that need to be examined in the next five years. Twenty academics from North and South America and Europe were invited and each was allowed to nominate two graduate students and/or recent post-docs so that there was a total of 60 of us.

My presentation on the voluntary eunuch community was very well received and I had very useful discussions with others afterwards. I think that there will be more interest in the community in the future. I will present my talk at the MoM next week for anyone who wishes to hear it.

Over the next couple of weeks I will write up some of the more interesting observations that I made, including, especially, some new information on the Hijra that was presented by a young PhD candidate who returned from his field research in Mumbai only two weeks before the conference.

I look forward to reading what you brought back. Alas, there's no way I could make it to the meeting to hear it in person.
