The issue with joining Facebook groups is the everyone your friends with can see it.

I know a lot of people out there who want to become eunuchs or have an interest in it but have not told anyone outside of this community.

Good luck with it, I left that platform years ago and it was the best choice I made.

I agree, the problems with invasive sharing, are bad, but to me the worse aspect is the compiling of profiles and sale of your data to anyone that is willing to pay for it, plus the invasive feeds pushing whatever the "algorithm" thinks might let them show you more advertising....

IMHO FB is a definite case of 'enshitification' at it's worst... I actually jumped through all the well hidden hoops needed to totally delete my FB account, and block any sort of cookies from FB, tracking links, etc...

Exactly - if they ban you, they HAVE to keep you in their database, if only to say that you are banned They also still get to keep all your data and information, and sell it to others, leave it where it can be swiped, and so on....

There was a hearing a year or two ago where they admitted that even their engineers don't really know how much info they are keeping about users, and where it is all stored - the result of code being piled on top of code, and the resulting mess never really cleaned up beyond fixing the latest bug...

Thank you for going (not going) this route. Although the choice is up to the individual on whether or not to participate on fb, there are many in my contact group I'd rather not know. It's a fairly private decision and a very personal choice to pursue this.

People and corporations can be jerks, and poor keepers of sensitive information.

People and corporations can be jerks, and poor keepers of sensitive information.

There have been many who have noted that as a class we are a very secretive group, including those that have written research papers on us...

EAv2 used an colocation server, but was essentially private. When they shut down there were a significant number of folks that were talking about movng to FB, Discord, or one of the other big servers... One of the significant concerns that several of us raised was the entire privacy issue of who got to see things like user information. Most of those other services are definitely information sharing or selling, which made them unacceptable. There was also the concern that if you are running on someone else's service, all it takes is for the service to decide to change their rules about what's acceptable content, and everything goes poof...

EAv3 is running on a server that Fusion owns, and the only people that have access to user info are the board admins that need it to make things work and fix problems... In addition the site is backed up to a few other locations (in different parts of the world) on a regular basis.... So we have the privacy that many of us desire, and are pretty much impossible to shut down as long as the Internet is up...

The Fiction Archive works in a similar way FWIW.

I know there is also a group on Discord, and I will not personally join it for the same reason...

OK, enough. I got the message. The Facebook thing was a bad idea. I should learn to live by my own motto, "Trust No one". As far as any place being safe, dream on. As long as humans inhabit the earth, here will be cheating, stealing, killing, The whole nine yards. I've been around long enough to know. As far as this subject is concerned, time to move on. Not saying it's a bad idea, just that I won't participate in it, and won't encourage others to. Most of the rest of it is going into why FB is not a great platform for those that don't want to be publicly out to one and all. You made the decision to follow a different path and be very out, so this might not bother you, or others that might wish to be involved. No right or wrong about either choice,

To the extent that we benefit as a community the more people know we exist, and that it is an option for those that wish to take it, there might even be advantages to it. I just am not going there personally.

I also don't trust FB for other reasons that I consider sound, obviously given their userbase, lots of other folks don't agree with me... Their choice.

There are people that do bad things, no getting around that for sure. I just figure that the harder you make it for them, the less likely they are to bother me instead of the guy that makes it easy. I don't have to outrun the bear, just the other guy he is also chasing...

That (not the 'poof' part) almost happened before - initially EAv2 was 'under the wing' of BME, and then they split, when attitudes changed, if I remember correctly.

But this is a real concern. Asking some service to leave due to policies is easy (reddit bans groups for various reasons all the time). Taking down domain name, with private hosting is way harder and requires actually illegal content, among other things.

It did happen then with the split from BME, and it sort of happened again as EAv2 was shutting down... There were at least some efforts to save the EAv2 content that would have happened in the last week or two, but then there was a communications mixup with the ISP that was running the hosting server for the site, which led to it being wiped unexpectedly...

Hopefully the current setup is robust against that sort of failure.

I just tried signing up to FB to join this group but abandoned it immediately.

I was on FB but left it a decade ago (I worked in tech and am against everything they are and do) because of how invasive, leaky, and just plain technically sloppy it is.

At registration the platform was asking for mandatory video facial recognition to complete enrolment!!!!

Sounds like yet ANOTHER reason I'm glad that I actually went through all the hoops needed to actually delete my Fakebook account... I try to avoid links to FB as much as I can, and have got all my privacy add-ons set to block it if I click on one by accident (they aren't always obvious

Yeah that was a rhetorical question. I was “part of the problem” in being one of the people who did the work in the early days both in what has become the default strategies and methodologies that evolved into the drivers of social media, as well as the early days of boundary-setting around privacy and consent that have been flagrantly trampled on and swept to the garbage heap by the tech world. So, I get what’s happening and why…
