I had a dream last night though I think of it more as a nightmare of sorts. I'll describe it and let you judge:

"There was a knock at the door in the morning so I went to answer it. To my suprise it was my mom. I let her in and we began to talk. She was very coherent and began to nag me about the condition of 'her house' almost immediately. She was upset that there were three unfixed plumbing problems, one electrical problem, no gas hence no heat in the house, no stove to cook her a meal and the floors were dirty due to no vacuum cleaner. I explained to her the nursing home seized her $1,200 a month which she knew about but still nagged me for not getting things fixed. I tried to explain I can't do much on $540 a month but she still nagged.

I asked her how long she was home for and she said, 'just the day." I had two immediate thoughts: (1) I was glad she wasn't going to be here for more than a day since I couldn't tolerate her nagging too much longer. (2) my guilty thought was 'if mom was coherent again, there was no reason for her to be in the nursing home and it was up to me to fight to get her out of there and back to her house again.' In addition I would have to get her money from the nursing home back to my hands.

Mom insisted we go for a ride to the grocery store. I started to explain both cars were gone to which she was about to scream at me in anger" then I woke up.

"When the Revolution begins", so I once said, " first we shoot all the used car salesmen, telemarketers, tax collectors and bill collectors." Especially the bill collectors.

One such vermin just called me with another threat. "pay us immediately or your credit will suffer." What credit, I have no credit.

I owe his company $1,100 for a one mile ambulance ride to the hospital. It might just be me but $1,100 a mile sounds like gouging if not excessive. The represenative asked me, "how do you intend to pay this off. Can I collect today." I replied that I lived on Social Security of only $540 a month and I have no savings..

Again he asked, "can I come collect today or you can pay it off over two months." I repeated what my monthly income was to him. Again he offered the two month plan.

I then hung up on the poor, deaf bastard.

Just tell the bill collector to stop calling, by law in California they must stop once you request it.

And if they send you bills in the mail you can also request in writing that they stop that as well.

If you want to have some fun and really piss them off you can try sending them a check of $1.00. Add a note that you will pay $1.00 next month. Go and mention what your Social Security check is. It will cost them so much time and money to cash the $1.00 check it would not be worth it for them. When they see that you will be doing it each month they may reconsider your bill.

Such a ruse would never legally discharge a debt. OTOH, a debtor holds many of the cards - he either has the money to pay at his will, or he doesn't and that leaves the other guy essentially impotent (financially). Play it for all it is worth - the dollar gambit certainly appeals to me - offer a monthly payment, and remind them that you can afford that, but no more. One thing to keep in mind - bill collectors are professional assholes and are very good at it - they all work on commission - percentage of whatever is collected. And if they sue, they can't legally take your social insecurity payments.

Do you have a helpline for Seniors in your local listings? And/or a Legal Aid listing? A regional Office for the Aging listing?

The sad Wolf needs a little help, and should be a happy Wolf.

I don't know if any of the specific lines of advice that many have offered in this thread will or will not help. I do know that you can not reason or use human logic with a bill collector, as they are indeed professional assholes who have evolved from a different slimy microbe than did homo sapien.

It should cheer you a bit to know that so many here do sincerely care.

Mom update:

The nursing home just called to tell me they were shipping

her to St. Bernadine's Hospital

for pneumonia. This is her 5th pneumonia episode in two years.

I'll walk up and see her tomorrow as it's only a mile away.

I just noticed I would run out of Paxil before my next doctor's appointment on January 9th. I have 19 pills left.

Anyone know if Paxil would still be effective if I rationed them at one every other day? Just curious

Good day so far:

I picked up an application for Food Stamps.

I found a Food Bank which I can go to twice a week. Good thing to as I was down to a bag of potatoes and one buck.

The Food Bank gave me two loaves of bread, a pack of salami, cherrios, a bag of rice, vegetable soup, grape juice and popcorn. Not half bad

Darn, they forgot my gin. It is the opiate of the masses ya know

I was offline for 35 hours because the batteries in my keyboard died screaming. When I obtained the cordless mouse and keyboard, I went out and bought packs of AA batteries that fit the mouse and the TV remote.

I forgot the keyboard uses AAA.

All better now.

P.S. Yay, it's payday and I have food.

In case you missed any TV because of battery swapping, you might want to know about this Public Service Announcement that comes up, so to speak, from time to time:

I was almost worried myself for a second because I misheard the notice. I thought they had said four minutes.

On a side note, I asked my new Chinese MD about her opinion on Cialis and whether the new once a day version was better than the 36-hour version I use sometimes. She apparently does not watch a lot of TV, and seriously asked me (with a real or apparent look of lust), "you mean it lasts for 36 hours?"
