O.K., just what you wanted - a quick history lesson. Our current "Goobernator" is the 38th since California became a state. Of the first seven governors, six were Democrats and the seventh was a "Know Nothing" (by then renamed the American Party).

The last two of this string of Democrats were elected on a pro-slavery platform at the same time that Lincoln became president. They were elected as governor and lieutenant governor. Milton Latham, the elected governor, resigned after 5 days in office and was succeeded by the lieutenant governor, John Downey, who served out his term.

From 1862 (won by Republican Leland Stanford, who founded the university) through 1900 the Democrats and Republicans pretty much alternated in office. From the election of 1898 to the present, California has had mostly Republican governors (14 of them). In that time, Hiram Johnson served two terms as a Progressive Party governor (1911-1917). For Democrats, the Browns (Pat & Jerry - father and son) each served two terms; Culbert Olson served one term and Gray Davis served most of a term before he was recalled in the election that Schwarzenegger won. (I voted for Larry Flint in that one!)

21 Republicans

1 Progressive

UGH... This is the Fifth day of my Flu so far. So far, I don't mind the runny nose or the hacking cough so much as I do those damn body aches: hell, even my wrists and toes were hurting.

Whichever flu I contracted, the worse is that miserable blase feeling and those hellish body aches.

I can relate now to the phrase, "death warmed over"

Today, my head finally cleared so I thought I'd walk/bus to the downtown library. I walked over to the local grocery to get lunch and bus money for the trip. By the time I arrived back at my house, my head was clear enough to notice my body felt like stale chit.

Actually, my stomach feels raw like I barfed all night though, I haven't barfed in decades.

Despite this craving for reading material, I think I'll stay home and concentrate on my recovery for at least another day.

I slept in till noon: apparently, I needed the extra sleep. As soon as the shakes stop, I'll go catch the bus to the ER.

Docs said only thing wrong with me is full blown pneumonia. They pumped me full of Levequin and gave me an Rx for Azithromycin 250mg but only 6 tabs.

Last night I took 500 mgs of my antibiotic as directed.

Today, I'm walking over to the grocery as I'm out of everything tasty. I don't feel strong enough to shop but the Doc said I was to remain active so.....

I seem to be recovering slowly from my pneumonia.

Yay, I'm over my pneumonia. Now if I could get over this *@#&%$ Summer Heat. Twas 96 today and I have no AC. Fans, however, are better than nothing.

Congratulations on the new computer.

I've read that MAC's are pretty good about finding all of their stuff when first fired up, unlike Windows machines, which have to be pointed to each thing one at a time.

Today began like most Sundays, slow and peaceful. Liz and the woman next door were sharing a garage sale in my front yard.

Someone said something to peeve the other and a fist-fight started. Liz got the worst of it with several blows to her face. She called the police on the neighbor but the police refused to make arrests and just diffused the situation like they should have.

I wasn't involved.

As I grow older (though not as old as River) I find my declining days as anything but boring.

This month's utilities aren't half bad.

Gas bill is still a zero balance

Electric bill is a credit. Apparently, I over paid.

Cable bill is $182.32. I'll get it down next month.

Water bill is $136. Bill came only a few days after I fixed the leak.

Fun night here last night. Monty, the bum who sleeps on my back porch, got into a fight with Liz's 20 year old son and her girlfriend. The girlfriend beat him on the my front porch. The son beat him in my kitchen. I called the cops but they only took Monty then let him go 20 minutes later. Monty returned three times threatening to bust my front window and to kill me if I didn't let him in my house. I didn't let him in.

The cops finally cuffed him. I'm waiting to see if the take him away.

Never a boring night at Mac's house.

Then again there are days I'd like to have a serious talk with the guy who said "may we live in interesting times."

The cops took him away for the night only. He was back at 7:20am demanding to get in but I refused.

He finally agreed to move in with Ruben, a guy who offered him free rent and food if he did odd jobs for him. Monty will be sitting on my front porch till 5:00pm when Ruben gets off from work.

It will be nice to get rid of him FINALLY.
