Possible import of some EAv2 threads

Post by Neutrum260725 »

After the announcement of EA2's end, I tried to copy as many archived threads as possible and save them to a NAS, but unfortunately not all of them. If there's interest, I can try to upload as many threads as possible.

I think that it would be great, but I want to talk with some of the other board folks to see how they'd like to handle them... My initial thought would be that rather than trying to shoehorn the area layout of EAv2 into our slightly different layout, it might be better to create a separate area as read-only archive. I also don't know how well they will survive the copy and re-import process in terms of keeping quotes and such intact, so it may take a few tries to figure out how best to import them...

I will definitely try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Re: Possible import of some EAv2 threads CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Post by WheelyFixed »

OK, an update, I just had a brief chat w/ Fusion, and what I think will be possible is to create a separate, limited access 'playground' area where we can experiment with importing the threads until we have found a method that works well, and decide if we want to have it be 'read only' or allow new posts to the imported threads, etc.

I'm not sure what will be involved in trying to get the content imported. I have a dump of the old site that was taken shortly before the end, and poking at it with a text editor I wasn't able to get very good results, as it didn't properly preserve quotes and other formatting. Because of this I suspect we may need to create some sort of 'translator' program to convert from the EAv2 format to our current phpBBS format....

So the plan is to create a separate limited access area to experiment in with access limited to those working on this project...

So this is a CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS that would be willing to help out on this project - we will need people with some level of experience w/ programming or scripting (skills I do not have) and who are willing to put in some effort get this done...

Post here if interested,

I will also post progress reports in this thread as we make our way through it.

I strongly suspect that would be a semi-manual process. This is the dump that I made, right?

What I have is a copy of the dump you made, I think... I'm not sure what Neutrum has, from what he said it sounds like individual threads that he saved personally, don't know which might be easier to deal with...

Hello everyone,

In EAv2, there was an archive function that saved older threads. For example, avatars weren't displayed, and quotes were difficult to recognize. I copied one section after another, resulting in thousands of files ending up on my NAS. The original links on "eunuch.org" are still there, but of course, they no longer work. The files are readable in the browser, but you have to click on them individually. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to copy everything.

I think the script by "fhunter" was only intended for the stories.

The copies amount to approximately 800 MB of data, consisting of an HTML file and a folder containing the "archive.css" file.

Ideally, EAv3 would provide a dedicated upload area that isn't accessible to everyone. Once the data is uploaded, we can consider the next steps without public access. It would also be advisable to contact the EAv2 team to see if they are okay with this.

Another way to access the old data could be through the Kinsey Institute. If I remember correctly, the entire archive was supposed to go to the institute.

I'm pretty sure the EAv2 folks would be OK with it, though as far as I know, Paolo and LT are the only ones of the old staff that we can still ask. Talula has passed away, Kristoff is not in good health. I'm in contact w/ Paolo and LT occasionally posts here under his new handle, though I haven't seen him for a while.

According to Jesus, The Kinsey Institute did get the story dump, (so did I) and a backup of the forum from a few days previous, however they did not get the board software and so on, because that all got lost in the shutdown confusion. I don't know how willing the KI would be to share the stuff they have.

I may have the same sort of archive file you have Neutrum, It is a zip, 85.8 MiB that extracts to 237.9 MiB. If I dig down into it, I can find what looks like HTML files for each thread (or possibly part of a thread - some had multiple files with 'p-#' in the names. Those open up to text w/o much in the way of formatting, no clear quotes, smilies and so on...

Hello WheelyFixed
The following is one thread from EAv2 Blogs & Life Stories

View Full Version : 3 years after penetomy

Its now 3 years since my penectomy in the US. Only 3 years but it feels like it was always like this. The adjustment after the penectomy was strange at first but now it just feels natural. Would I do it again? Yes.

The only thing that I find very difficult is not gaining even more weight (I take no Testosterone). I bought a home trainer hoping I would do more exercise. Absolutely necessary...

Three years, wow! Glad you're happy. Congrats! I will be celebrating five years without a penis on June 12th, hard to believe.

First of all many congrats on celebrating three years. And exercise does wonders for not gaining weight. The first year and a half after my surgery I had a lot of exercise sailing a blue water boat with no engine whatsoever. The amount of exercise I got simply keeping the boat going around the world I am certain kept me from gaining weight. I never took "T". After that first your and a half I did however note a drop in my energy, stamina and strength. Decided it was a lack of hormones. But I replaced them with "E". Even with that I didn't notice weight gain. So my diet perhaps had a lot to do with that issue. We are after all what we put into our bodies. If you're not taking any replacement hormones you may want to take a closer look at your diet together with exercise. Or maybe you bought the exercise equipment and either haven't used it or found the correct use for it. Talk to some trainers in your area and you may find a solution.
And again, CONGRATULATIONS! It seems that each passing year I have found even greater satisfaction of my choice to have it all removed.

Hello again
the thread looks like text only, but if you use the html file you can read it in your browser like any other html file.

That looks very much like what I find when I get into my dump of the forum and look at it with just the default viewer it uses in my archive manager (ARK). The first question would be if it preserves the quotes and such properly when looking at the HTML file? If it does, then the question becomes how do we get the HTML file into something our phpBBS system uses (I'd be a bit surprised if that didn't exist somewhere) and possibly clean up any extra 'artifacts' like the vBulletin taglines...

I will go ahead and ask them to set up the 'playground' area so we can start testing.
