I certainly had nothing to do with hitting anyone. If I feel my posts and responses are getting off balance I settle the issue(s) out of forum, if possible. If that doesn't work out I appeal to the moderator, again via PM.

Moi did not not say anything to deserve that reputation hit. I helped him get some back with a positive hit. It would be a nice jesture if others would do the same.

Negative reputation is not nice and especially if the giver does not identify them self. I don't believe in playing the negative reputation game and will not give it even when others are insulting or over critical toward me. We are not here for the purpose of being nasty to each other.

Noi was over critical of me for my post in the Political Forum but then apologized and tried to make amends.

Please help Moi to recoup his unfair loss.

Suggestions (if possible):

(1) Block negative reputation but allow positive reputation.

(2) Include an automatic signature of the poster for all reputation hits.

(3) Close the Political and Deep Dark Cellar forums.

That was not a good choice. How about restoring the reputation that you turned off.

So the reputation points got shot?

Mac, I think that only point 2 of yours would work.

First point kills the idea of reputation points. Negative reputation can and should be given at appropriate situations.

Third point - deep dark cellar and political forum are like a.... let's say a containment area. If it will be closed, political threads will spread like a disease :) on the whole forum. It is either contained, controlled and quarantined in one place, or it will be all over.

Probably, switching off the reputation points for the political section would be a good idea, but I do not know wherever vbulletin software allows such setting.

What is interesting is that when I looked this AM, Moi had not received any negative hits at all. He has had 2 positives in the past month till last night. So perhaps some pips converted to a star? Hallucinations maybe?

If the rep points come back - I'll leave that to Paolo - there is no function to force ID anyone. But anyone who leaves bad karma without a name is a coward and should be ignored. Negative karma cannot be blocked. The Cellar and Political forums will not go away - fhunter has it exactly correct. They are useful at times and certainly are a containment area. Everyone needs a place to pee....

The ethics of a post seemed to go above and beyond.

It was not a matter of agreement.

I issued and signed off on a negative reputation.

The first negative I have authored in ages.

I was PM'ed.

We PM'ed a few times and two things became apparent.

1) I did not understand my weight when issuing a reputation.

2) Two seemingly respectable people had a difference of opinion.

So, I deferred to kristoff with a copy to the new PM partner,

for kristoff to restore or not as he saw fit.

And then.

And then all my Suns aka Yellow Bursts, where gone to one.

Some 15 Bright Yellow thingies - gone except one along with a few green bars.

No mistake. I was raided, again. Not a password issue. How could I do it with my password? So how could anyone else with my password?

I enjoy the feedback when I write something well and have been giving positives also. I do hope the system comes back but, anyone who will not sign their user name should stay out of it.

Then again, I'll do anything for approval. :)

As I understand it, you cannot leave bad Karma without giving a reason.

I have turned it off for now.

Chalk it up to a bug or glitch.

I'll keep in mind what you had when I restore it.

IF I restore it...

Exactly. That's why they are a necessary evil.

Can't be done. VB doesn't work that way. I checked last night after getting six (6) whining emails and PM's about reputation points.

If the Karma points come back, which I really don't care one way or the other, I am wondering if it can be changed so that you don't get 5 stars for one approval. Because I have so many when I give one to a newer person it jumps them to fast. it makes me wait and not give them. I have seen people with as few as 30 posts and have three lines of stars. This should not be possible. Just my opinion for what its worth.

Maybe this will be one of the topics at the winter staff meeting, along with good food and fellowship of course.

Karma systems always end up corrupted, which is why most forums have discontinued them. I have seen people team up to distroy a person's reputation because of political differences or something as simple as feeling slighted by someone.

I have seen those who also build followings to raise their reputation. If a person gives everyone on the forum positive reputation, many times people feel the need to reciprocate at some future time, which allows a person to build a high reputation simply because the high number of people they gave reputation to.

This leads others to believe that some people give too much reputation, as more of a popularity contest than any measure of the persons contributions to the forum.

To give Moi reputation simply because he lost them, defeats the purpose of getting them to begin with. It would only tell us that Moi is well liked, which of course we already know.

I know Vbulletin can identify the person giving the reputation because I have been on Vbulletin forums where every person giving reputation good or bad is identified along with a short message.

Personally, I think reputation is of little use and only ends up being something negative. Besides, anyone can have something interesting to say at any time, even if in the past what they wrote did not seem all that interesting. In this regard the reputation system does little to inform us to the expected quality of the post or the poster.

If the decision were mine, I would not return the reputation system. All one has to do is ask one simple question: "What good can come from it?".

Thank you for turning off that system. Yes, there was a day that I looked at it and wanted my numbers to grow. I don't care anymore. It is unimportant to me now in the broader scheem of things. I am glad it is gone and I vote that it never returns.

While I am indifferent regarding the return of the reputation points, I do miss the comment section that went along with them. I found it very useful to get individual feedback, both positive and negative from readers, that they might not want to post publicly. Were I designing the system, reputation points, positive or negative would require both a comment and a signature. It's a little frustrating to get a negative reputation hit without any explanation of what the reader didn't like.

Right on!

Plus -

I discovered some nice PM buddies via comments left. Even from a negative hit I signed off on.

Transward, I regret I cannot add to your reputation for the above post.

I agree. When I first joined, before getting to know many members, if someone with a high reputation point responded about an issue I thought that must be the right answer. The reputation points were an indicator of knowledge and long term involvement with the site. A new member today might make the mistake that all are equal in knowledge.
